French intellectuals last night denounced “the state anti-Semitism” now prevalent in the Soviet Union. Andre Lwoff, French Nobel Prize winner for medicine told a public meeting that the situation of Jewish scientists in the Soviet Union “has seriously deteriorated in recent months.” Lwoff stressed that “a government which does not respect the rights of its own citizens can certainly not respect those of other states and other people.”
A former president of the French Supreme Criminal Court. Maurice Rolland, said “in the Soviet Union it is the state and the government which encourage and shape popular anti-Semitism.” He said the only way to make the Soviet authorities stop this practice is through world public opinion. Several university professors, writers, philosophers and other intellectuals attended the meeting.
