The controversy over France’s Middle East policies, inflamed by the protest demonstrations that greeted President Georges Pompidou on his American visit, has aroused widespread fears here of a recrudescence of anti-Semitism. Radio Luxembourg, a privately owned station, devoted its evening newscast to the subject today. The French Jewish Students Federation issued a statement warning that “declarations implying that Jews are agents of foreign powers can easily create a renaissance of anti-Semitism.” The statement referred to remarks attributed to M. Pompidou that Israel was using its racial and religious ties abroad to further its policies. Jewish and non-Jewish groups are examining the situation. French Jewish organizations plan to hold an extraordinary Joint meeting next week to discuss the possible consequences.
