Sholom Schwartzbard, Ukrainian Jew who killed Semion Petlura in revenge for the anti-Jewish pogroms in the Ukraine under Petlura’s regime, was pronounced sane and responsible for his act by the French medical examiners. The experts, however, recognize him to be a mystic with passionate race sentiments, it was learned today.
A large group of Schwartzbard’s French neighbors are preparing a petition to the court, expressing sympathy with Schwartzbard.
M. Henri Torres, Schwartzbard’s counsel, received representatives of the press yesterday, to whom he showed documents of the Chevra Kadisha, the Jewish burial society of Proskuroy, containing all the names of the victims of the pogrom in that city. He is also in possession of an old Odessa Russian daily containing a letter by Shulgin, accusing Petlura of the murders. M. Torres also stated that he received a letter from the former Danish Consul in Kiev who wishes to appear as a witness at Schwartzbard’s trial. Messrs. Gurevitch, Revutzki, Haifetz and other persons have asked Torres that they be called as witnesses in the trial. M. Torres also announced that after the hearing which will be held on October 14, the defense will be reorganized.
