Jews whose professional activities do not require their stay in Vichy were directed today, for the second time, to leave Vichy and its environs.
Today’s order, which came in the form of an official announcement, follows the Governments action of a fortnight ago serving expulsion orders on all persons residing in Vichy hotels who are not employed in State services. Those in Vichy for health cures must obtain special permits to remain.
“The scarcity of rooms makes it impossible even for military people in need of a cure to remain in Vichy”, today’s communique explains.
Another order just issued prohibits Jews from going to French coastal areas, including the Biviera, unless special permission is obtained. The order does not affect Jews who are permanent residents of those areas.
The full text of the decree limiting the number of Jewish lawyers to two per cent has just been published here. Unlike other anti-Jewish laws, the decree does not apply to Jewish lawyers in the French colonies, protectorates and mandated territories.
Leaders of the Alliance Israelite Universelle have expressed much satisfaction that the Anglo-French peace terms in Syria preserve intact the rights of French cultural institutions in Syria, whether Catholic, Jewish or of any other faith. It was said that the four Jewish schools conducted by the Alliance in Beirut, Damascus, Aleppo and Sidon will continue their work as before the war, thus benefiting many thousands of students.
