French Premier Edgar Faure received this week-end Jacques Dahan, leader of the Moroccan Jewish delegation to the Franco-Moroccan talks aimed at restoring order in Morocco, for a discussion of the delegation’s viewpoint on the projected settlement.
In a statement issued here, the Moroccan Jewish delegation–which characterized the Moroccan Jewish communities as “animated by a deep desire for social peace,” and “conscious of having usefully served the Moroccan community as a bond between French society, with whose culture they are deeply impregnated, and Moslem society which has such generous traditions”–welcomed “with great satisfaction, the announcement of democratic reform which will inaugurate a new era for Morocco and for Franco-Moroccan friendship, which all political tendencies in Morocco recognize as the essential foundation of Morocco’s future.”
“But no matter how deep the affliction which we are all suffering in the face of over-whelming incidents, we must come back to harsh reality and assert forcefully that the time for action cannot be held back,” the statement insisted, “It is high time that everything possible be done to restore the Franco-Moroccan friendship, which should never have been affected to this point. The Jewish communities of Morocco, which owe Morocco so much, are ready to use all their energies and all their faith to guide Morocco toward her national destiny,” it concluded.
