French President Jacques Chirac called for legal measures to protect judges attacked on the basis of their ethnic or religious origins. In a letter to the country’s highest judicial body, Chirac said a recent case in which a Tunisian man demanded an appeal against his sentence because the judge was Jewish “had created undeniable and legitimate anger.”
