French president Jacques Chirac met with a delegation of American Jewish leaders Monday in New York, defending France against charges of anti-Semitism, expressing concern about Iran’s weapons capabilities and saying that Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat is the only Palestinian leader who can break the cycle of Israeli-Palestinian violence. Chirac did not respond to the chairman of the World Jewish Congress’ point that there is a connection between France’s policies toward Israel and French public attitudes toward Jews.
