Forty million francs have been appropriated by the French Haut Commissariat here for enlarging the port in this city. Present plans indicate that the authorities are contemplating a harbor that will compete with the Haifa harbor, which was dedicated last month and provides up-to-date facilities. The motive behind the appropriation is fear that the Haifa harbor will attract business now coming to the port here.
Negotiations are also on foot for the construction of a railroad between Syria, Mosul and Persia. The Persian government is seeking to make Beirut a sea outlet and a free passageway to the hinterland.
