French troops today patrolled the Jewish quarter of Constantine, east of here, which was the scene of intense Arab-European fighting and assassination in the past few days. Although Jews were victims of some of these actions, they took no part in the fighting.
Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Jean Noiret, commander of French troops in Eastern Algeria, issued a call to all inhabitants of Constantine to refrain from taking the law in their own hands. More than 20 Arabs died and twice that many were wounded as a result of European vigilante action which followed the bombing of a Jewish cafe in Constantine by Arab terrorists. Fourteen Jews have been wounded in the past two days, although none was reported killed.
