Fighting broke out anew today in the mellah, the Jewish quarter, in the Algerian city of Oran, and French Government security forces imposed a strict curfew on the district, sealing off the Jews there entirely from contact with the outside world, according to authoritative news received here today.
Commandos believed affiliated with the OAS, the French anti-independence movements in Algeria, attacked French police bases in Oran last night. The commandos, according to the French, were presumably based in the Jewish quarter. The Government security forces said today that a house-to-house check in the mellah had yielded five machine guns and 100 rifles. The French have, thus far, detained about 50 Jews living in the Oran mellah, holding some for suspicion of affiliation with the OAS.
