Friedrich Peter, a leader of the Freedom Party, junior partner in Austria’s new Socialist-led coalition government, stepped down Tuesday as a candidate for the office of Third President of Parliament because of widespread protests over his Nazi past. Peter was a former officer of the First SS Infantry Brigade which was notorious for mass murders during World War II.
