So far as Chicago is concerned the DAWA is merely an alphabetical arrangement without meaning.
Efforts on the part of Hans Froehlich, president of the DAWA in New York, where the Deutsch Amerikanische Wirtschafts Ausschuss (German American Protective Alliance) is being used as an anti-Jewish boycott weapon in the hands of Nazi sympathizers, to ###ate a DAWA cell in Chicago ###ere a complete flop.
DAWA leaders are sorely disappointed over the outcome of their meeting held last night in the Atlantic Hotel, which attracted about thirty per cent of the expected turn-out. Nazis had estimated from 500 to 800 persons would attend. Those who did attend were obscure unknowns. Not a single important German American merchant was ##esent.
Froehlich advised Chicago to use the DAWA for purposes similar to those being pursued in New York, where, he said, 30,000 boycott buttons have been sold to consumers at $1 apiece. He said in New York the DAWA office keeps its staff of ten men busy distributing literature. He urged that all Chicago German American merchants be brought into line, and asked that everyone possible travel to Germany, taking advantage of cheap rail fares there, because the Fatherland needs tourist money.
