Purim was carnival day all over Jewish Palestine this year. At Tel-Aviv, the festivities started early. Thousands of people arrived from Jerusalem, Haifa and the neighboring colonies. On Saturday evening a great masquerade ball was held in the Exhibition grounds attended by 2,500 people. The revelry continued into Sunday morning.

One “carnival” feature which attracted much attention was a procession of funeral mutes, carrying a large black “coffin” on which was inscribed: “The Mandate, the Jewish Legion, and those institutions and hopes interred with the Mandate and the Jewish Regiment.” Traffic was suspended in Tel-Aviv to allow the carnival procession to pass through the thronged streets. Over 30,000 people took part, including many Arabs.

In Jerusalem there was a big carnival celebration on Sunday evening and all day Monday. Masqueraders, mounted and on foot, paraded the streets. There were many Arabs among the sightseers.
