Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon for Max Thomashefsky, member of a prominent Jewish theatrical family and himself active as a Jewish theatre producer for more than three decades.
Mr. Thomashefsky succumbed to an illness of three months at the Israel Zion Hospital at the age of 60.
Born in Kiev, on March 21, 1872, Mr. Thomashefsky came to this country at the age of five. He abandoned dentistry study for the theatre and launched upon his theatrical career in philadelphia where for many years his activities in the Yiddish theatre were centered.
Mr. Thomashefsky is a brother of Boris Thomashefsky, former star of the Yiddish theatre in this country and uncle of Muni Weisenfreind, who has scored a success in the American theatre and in motion pictures under the name of Paul Muni.
He served as manager for Jack Dempsey, Vivienne Segal, Belle Baker, Molly Picon, Arthur. Tracy and James Waters.
In Philadelphia he managed the Columbia, National, Arch and Garden theatres. For a period he was manager of the Lyceum Theatre in Washington for the Shuberts.
It is stated that Mr. Thomashefsky was the first producer to take Yiddish theatrical attractions on the road.
His widow and son, both connected with the theatre, survive.
