Funeral services were held here yesterday for Gustav Stern, Orthodox Jewish lay leader and philanthropist, who died Monday at the age of 65. Born in Fulda, Germany, he came to the United States in the late 1920s and with his brother, Max Stern, established the Hartz Mountain Food Co. Max Stern also is a leading Orthodox leader and philanthropist.
Mr. Stern had been chairman of the board of the Rabbinical Court of America, a tribunal he founded in 1960 to help resolve family problems. He was chairman of the executive committee of the World Academy in Jerusalem and, with Sir Isaac Wolfson of London, built a home for the chief rabbinate of Jerusalem. He and his brother helped found the Stern College for Women of Yeshiva University.
