Funeral services were held here yesterday for Lazarus Joseph, a former controller of the City of New York, who died at the age of 75. He was a grandson of Rabbi Jacob Joseph, one of the city’s most prominent Orthodox rabbis at the turn of the century.
Born in New York City, Mr. Joseph served in the New York State Senate in the 1930’s and he was an adviser to Governor Herbert H. Lehman. He was New York City controller from 1946 to 1954. An active supporter of leading Jewish causes, Mr. Joseph aided the campaigns of the United Jewish Appeal and the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. The 1, 000 students of the Rabbi Jacob Joseph Yeshiva, named for Mr. Joseph’s grandfather, held special memorial services for Mr. Joseph.
