Funeral service will be held here tomorrow for Dr. Samson Benderly, pioneer Jewish educator, who died at his home in Godeffroy, New York, yesterday after a brief illness. He was 68.
Dr. Benderly was born in Palestine and educated at the American University in Beirut. He came to the United States in 1898 and settled in Baltimore, where he conducted several Jewish schools. He later moved to New York and was graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.
In 1910, however, Dr. Benderly returned to the field of Jewish education, becoming director of the Bureau of Jewish Education here, which he helped to found. He occupied that post until his death. Best known of his many works on Jewish education and culture is the Outline of Jewish Knowledge which he wrote in collaboration with Israel Goldberg.
