Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon, at two o’clock, in Piser’s chapel, 4911 Broadway, for Mrs. Bessie Koenigsberg Schoolman, for many years a leader in Jewish communal life, who died Wednesday at her home, 2801 Diversey boulevard.
Mrs. Schoolman was 64 years old. After several months’ illness in a hospital she returned home in the belief that recovery was under way, when pneumonia, which proved fatal, set in.
Her work included the co-founding of the University of Chicago Settlement House. She established the Institute Woman’s Club, organized the Jewish Educational Alliance and was past president of the Northwest branch of Chicago Hadassah.
Her earliest efforts dealt with the organizing of the women garment workers in New York City, the first women’s union in the United States. Her activities embraced war relief, the Zionist movement and local philanthropies. She was born in Lithuania.
Mrs. Schoolman is survived by her husband, Dr. Harry M. Schoolman, and three children, Dr. Edward N., psychologist and lecturer; Ralph, dramatic and radio artist, and Eleanor, social worker.
