Secretary-General U Thant said here today that, due to the lack of financial support by members of the United Nations, “the future of some of the peace-keeping operations, like the United Nations Emergency Force and the United Nations Force in Cyprus, is rather gloomy,” “In spite of my repeated appeals for contributions,” he added, “the response has been far from encouraging.” He made that statement at a news conference in the course of a general review of many recent U.N. developments.

The UNEF has been stationed for nine years on the Egyptian-held side of the Gaza Strip border with Israel, and at Sharm el-Sheikh, overlooking the Gulf of Akaba. The emergency force acts as a policing body to keep the Egyptian-Israeli borders from erupting into conflict, and to guarantee freedom of Israeli shipping to and from the port of Eilat.
