Ecclesiastical action in the case of Rabbi Sapiro of Radyme, Galicia, will be taken at the initiative of a group of prominent rabbis of Eastern Galicia.
The case of Rabbi Shapiro, who was charged by Mrs. Zlata Rubin of New York with having married her in the United States while he had a wife in Poland, has attracted wide attention here. Mrs. Rubin made the charge against Rabbi Rubin when she was being tried in the district court of Przemysl on a charge of blackmail preferred by Rabbi Sapiro. The court returned a verdict of guilty against Mrs. Rubin. She was sentenced to four months imprisonment, one month at hard labor. Her sentence was suspended for three years.
Simultaneously the district attorney announced that proceedings would be started against Rabbi Sapiro on the charge of bigamy.
The Rabbis of Eastern Galicia have summoned Rabbi Sapiro to appear before a Beth Din (rabbinical court) which is to consider all the documents in the case and call all the witnesses. The Beth Din will render judgment, independent of whether or not Rabbi Sapiro will continue in the rabbinate.
The rabbinical court consists of Rabbi Steinberg of Jaroslow, Rabbi Schalit of Tarnopol. Deputy Rabbi Lewin of Sambor and Leib Braude. representing the Lemberg rabbinate.
