Gandhi’s grandson preached the doctrine of peaceful resistance to Yasser Arafat. After Thursday’s meeting in the Palestinian Authority president’s headquarters in Ramallah, Arun Gandhi told reporters that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict might be over if the Palestinians had adopted his grandfather’s strategy. “If the Palestinian people rise up and start a nonviolent movement, it will boost world sympathy,” Gandhi said. “The nations of the world will rise up and put more pressure on Israel.” Arafat did not speak at the news conference.
