No other occupation could have been “more benevolent or shorter” than Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip, the Mayor of the town of Gaza declared today. On the basis of the last 12 weeks’ experience with Israel’s administration of the Strip, Mayor Rushdi Shawa declared, ”we have the fullest confidence in the future.”
The Mayor reported that all public services in the town were functioning, life was normal and no troops were in evidence. He said that a letter sent by the head of five townships in the Strip to Premier David Ben Gurion expressing satisfaction with Israel’s accomplishments in the field of health, education, food supply and security in the Gaza territory were the sentiments of the entire population of the area.
