Gen. Ariel Sharon, the Yom Kippur War hero and leader of Likud, resigned his Knesset seat Sunday to assume a senior command position in the army reserve. He said his action was prompted by the deteriorating political situation in the Mideast and the likelihood that Israel will face a new war in the near future.
