Israel’s security problem has not changed in the past 15 years, General Yaacov Dori, president of the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, told the National Planning Conference of American Technion Society attended by 200 delegates from all parts of the United States. General Dori, who lead Haganah and served as Israel’s first Chief of Staff, emphasized that “We still face the threat of being annihilated by our neighbors.”
“We are not panicking but it is essential for everyone in Israel and abroad to understand the seriousness of the situation, ” he stressed. “If we want Israel to survive we must fight our battle of survival everyday. We cannot, under any circumstances afford to be complacent.”
Three major problems confront Israel today, he reported. These are: security, an abnormal economy and the cultural gap between Israel’s Afro-Asian and European communities. The security situation is serious not because of events of the past weeks, he said, but because of a lack of understanding of seriousness of this problem, “We must sacrifice and mobilize all our spiritual resources and if we do everything that must be done then we will be able to face up to any contingency, ” he stated.
