Racial and religious discrimination was condemned here as being “criminally stupid” by Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, Republican candidate for President of the United States, in the course of his address yesterday before the American Legion convention at Madison Square Garden.
“Let us once and for all resolve,” Gen. Eisenhower said, “that henceforth we shall be guided in our relations with our fellows by the American creed that all men are created equal and remain equal. All of us who salute the flag, whatever our color or creed, or job, or place of birth, are Americans entitled to the full rights and the full privileges of our citizenship. In a time when America needs all the skills, all the spiritual strength and dedicated services of its one hundred fifty-five million people, discrimination is criminally stupid.”
