Plans for the exhibition at the B’nai B’rith headquarters building in Washington next fall of papers and historical documents dealing with the Sephardic Jews were announced here today by the organization’s president, Label A. Katz, at a news conference following a meeting at El Pardo Palace here with General Francisco Franco. The American Jewish leader said the Spanish ruler had agreed to his request to move the exhibition to the United States.
The collection, described as the richest display of material dealing with the Sephardim, will be exhibited in other cities of the United States after it goes on view in Washington, Mr. Katz said. The documents will be made available on a loan basis to B’nai B’rith and are expected to be returned to Spain. The material represents a portion of an international exhibit held in Spain about two years ago dealing with the Sephardic Jews.
(In Washington, a Spanish Embassy spokesman expressed the hope that the material will be photostated for preservation in the United States before being sent back to Spain. “It would be a pity to return the documents without making a permanent record of them for students and others interested in this important and historical material,” he said.)
