Maj. Gen. Julius Ochs Adler, first vice-president and general manager of “The New York Times,” will retire from the Army Friday at the age of 62 after 40 years of service. For the last eight years, Gen. Adler has commanded the 77th (Statue of Liberty) Division, the Army reserve division in the New York military district.
Enlisting as a private in 1915, he was commissioned two years later as a Reserve lieutenant. He served in France in World War I, was gassed at St. Juvin in the Argonne Forest and emerged from the war as a major with the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Purple Heart, Croce de Guerra from Italy and Commandeur Legion d’honneur and Crois de Guerre with Palm from France.
