The resignation of General Weygand as High Commissioner of Syria caused much speculation as to his possible successor. The name of General Sarrails was mentioned as the next French High Commissioner of Syria.

However, the parliamentary opposition objects to his appointment because his views are considered to be extremely left and even socialistic.

General Weygand sacrificed his party interests for the position he held in Syria, the opposition leaders declare.
