An Israeli general said today that the future of the occupied Golan Heights of Syria would be determined by the presence of Jewish settlement rather than by the presence of Israeli soldiers in the region. Maj. Gen. David Elazar, commander of the northern sector, told a Keren Hayesod-United Jewish Appeal meeting that only the establishment of settlements would give the area a Jewish identity. Gen. Elazar said Israeli forces were in a position to absorb terrorist incursions in the region and to “make life unbearable” for the terrorists. UJA and Keren Hayesod leaders visited the Golan Heights where large sums of money have been invested by the Government and the Jewish Agency. Presiding over the meeting was Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of Keren Hayesod, the fund-raising arm of the world Zionist movement.
