The general strike called for yesterday by the Arab Executive on the occasion of the commencement of hearings of leaders of the Arab demonstrations last month, verged on complete collapse today.
Street cars and omnibuses continued their services without interruption. Arab shops which yesterday were only partly open, today were opened wide and normal conditions prevailed everywhere. The strike was most effective yesterday in the Old City. Extra police details patrolled the city yesterday and today but were not called upon for action.
Hearing of the defendants in the Jaffa disorders, which was to have begun tomorrow in Jaffa, was postponed until Monday, since Chief Magistrate Bodilly who was to have conducted the hearing, will be engaged with hearings in connection with the Jerusalem disorders of October 13.
The hearing of members of the Arab Executive arrested in connection with the Jerusalem disorders, began here yesterday. At mid-day, sixty women, members of prominent Arab families, brought refreshments to the defendants. Three police witnesses testified for the prosecution. The prosecution completed its case today and the defense will begin presentation of testimony tomorrow.
