LEADING JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS AND UNIONS TODAY ANNOUNCED A HALF-DAY STRIKE NEXT TUESDAY IN SYMPATHY WITH JEWISH STUDENTS WHO COMPLETED THIS EVENING A TWO-DAY STRIKE IN WARSAW AND OTHER CITIES TO PROTEST GOVERNMENT-SANCTIONED SEGREGATION OF JEWS IN COLLEGES. THE NATION-WIDE STRIKE WILL BE HELD FROM EIGHT A.M. UNTIL TWO P.M.
THE JEWISH DEPUTIES CLUB, COMPRISING MEMBERS AND FORMER MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT, AND OTHER JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS PROCLAIMED A “WEEK FOR JEWISH STUDENTS,” OCT. 20 TO 27, IN WHICH THE JEWISH POPULATION WILL BE ASKED TO SHUN ENTERTAINMENT, SPEND NO MONEY ON LUXURIES AND PLEASURES AND CONTRIBUTE THE FUNDS THUS SAVED TO JEWISH STUDENTS’ SELF-HELP ORGANIZATIONS AND FOR SIMILAR PURPOSES.
IN LWOW, WHERE JEWISH STUDENTS HAD AT FIRST NOT JOINTED THE STRIKE, THEY BARRICADED THEMSELVES TODAY IN THE STUDENT HOUSE AFTER FORTY HAD BEEN INJURED IN DISORDERS IN THE LWOW POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND THE SCHOOL OF COMMERCE. DEPUTY EMIL SOMMERSTEIN INTERVENED WITH EDUCATION MINISTER SWIETOSLAWSKI REGARDING THE EXCESSES.
IN WILNO AND LWOW, STRIKING JEWISH STUDENTS WERE JOINED TODAY BY UKRAINIAN AND WHITE RUSSIAN STUDENTS.
THE 1,500 JEWISH STUDENTS IN WARSAW TURNED THE SECOND DAY OF THEIR DEMONSTRATION INTO A HUNGER-STRIKE. FIVE STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED FOR DISTRIBUTING CIRCULARS ADDRESSED TO THE PROGRESSIVE POPULATION OF POLAND PROTESTING THE INTRODUCTION OF “GHETTO BENCHES” IN THE COLLEGES. THE CIRCULARS WERE CONFISCATED.
