With the Israeli and Syrian military working groups prepared to sign documents and maps tomorrow laying down the details of their disengagement process and the exchange of prisoners of war, attention here turned toward resumption of the general Middle East peace conference, in adjournment since its two-day opening session last Dec. Circles here noted that the Israeli and Syrian teams succeeded easily in working out details of disengagement well within the five day deadline set for the task by the agreement signed last Friday.
“Both sides showed good will and a strong desire to succeed,” the circles said. But despite the initial success, most diplomatic observers believe the peace conference will not re-open for some time yet. The Israeli and Syrian delegations both admit privately that “many problems” remain to be solved and that the conference “needs thorough preparation” which may take several months.
It is generally believed here that President Nixon will try to further the process during his trip to the Middle East next week and his Moscow summit meeting at the end of June.
