Georg Brandes’ Name Was Not Assumed Says Prof, Simonsen

At the time of the death of the late Georg Brandes, anti-Semitic publications in many countries alleged that Brandes was an assumed name, and that his real name was Morris Cohen. Professor David Simonsen of Copenhagen writing to the Society for Jewish Family Research, states that this is not the case. Brandes’ great-great-grandfather came to Denmark from Altona in Germany, he writes, and not from Lithuania as is alleged. His grandfather. Israel Cohen died in 1816 at an early age. The widow remarried her second husband being a Jew from Posen named Brandes. Their eldest son was Herman Moses Cohen Brandes and his son. who afterwards became famous as George Brandes was named Georg Morris Cohen Brandes. his real and full name.
