German authorities reported a 27 percent increase in extremist violence in Germany in 1997 over the previous year. One official said there were 791 acts of such violence last year. Government intelligence agencies estimate there are 48,400 right-wing extremists in Germany, some 7,600 of whom are classified as militants.
