Confidence that the German-Israel reparations pact will be ratified by the German Parliament was expressed in the press here today following the West German Cabinet’s forwarding this week-end the agreement to the Bundeerat, upper House of Parliament, for ratification.
The press points out that the Arab threat to boycott German goods unless West Germany grants Egypt credits of about $1,000,000,000 to “balance” the reparations which it will pay Israel, cannot be considered anything but blackmail. The West German Government is determined to obtain ratification of the agreement with Israel by April 1st, in order to be able to ship to Israel by that time industrial goods on the first installment of about $50,000,000 which Germany has to pay to Israel this year under the reparations pact.
The Finance Ministry announced this week-end that it has completed the drafting of a law unifying the compensation regulations in all states in Germany for Jews and other victims of the Nazi regime. The passing of such a law had been requested by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
