German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder wished film director Billy Wilder a happy 95th birthday, but acknowledged last week that Nazi Germany “did terrible things” to his family. Wilder, a Jew, left Germany in 1933, when Hitler came to power. His mother, who stayed behind, is thought to have died in the Holocaust.
