A protest against imposition of anti-Semitism as a cardinal doctrine of the church was contained in a statement by the Brotherhood Council of the Confessional Church of Germany, for whose transmission to the foreign press Pastor Weisler, head of the council, was placed in a concentration camp, it was stated here today.
The report was given by Leonard G. Montefiore, president of the Anglo-Jewish Association, at a meeting of the association. The Confessional Church’s statement was in the form of a letter addressed to Chancellor Hitler. Pastor Weissler was placed in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp last Summer, where he subsequently was stated by the Gestapo to have committed suicide.
At today’s meeting, Mr. Montefiore referred to a motion passed by the Board of Deputies of British Jews appointing a committee to investigate the working of the Joint Foreign Committee of the Board and of the Association. While reserving comment until the committee reports, he defended his policy as chairman of the Joint Foreign Committee.
Regarding as the principle duty of the committee to see what is happening in Germany, he said it should not be forgotten that the Nazi racial doctrine of glorification of force and ruthlessness must be discussed and condemned now and in the future.
