German Consul-General Hans Borchers last night defended Germany’s anti-Semitic measures and criticized freedom of press and worship in America in a speech at a meeting at the turn hall arranged by the consulate and attended by about 1,500 persons.
“If we enforce the expulsion of Jews from the life of the nation,” Dr. Borchers said, “we do so because it is essential for us and it seems a remarkable coincidence that other European nations do likewise. It is a grotesque spectacle to witness that those who have kept silent for twenty years come now to the fore with their attacks on totalitarian states. A special group among them are Jewish intellectuals whose activities national socialism has sufficiently denounced.”
The Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League today telegraphed Secretary of State Cordell Hull demanding Dr. Borchers recall. The league urged the American newspaper publishers’ association, the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America and the National Catholic Welfare Conference to join in the demand because of the consul’s criticism of free press and liberty of worship here. In a telegram to Dr. Borchers, the league denounced his “impudent violation of diplomatic courtesy.”
