Replying to the resolution recently passed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Los Angeles County, Dr. George Gyssling, vice-consul in charge of the German Consulate at Los Angeles, entered a vigorous denial that there were any Nazi groups being formed here, or that National Socialism was being spread here by propagandists.
“National Socialism is purely German and no article of export,” he asserted in a letter to the Los Angeles Record in which he said that Nazi groups in this country had been dissolved in February.
Congressman Thomas Ford of Los Angeles, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, in a short address before a group of Jewish men and women here stated that although as a public official he had to be cautious in his speech, yet “deep down in my heart I feel that any measure the Jews take in America to get back at Hitler and his gang, is justified.”
“I don’t think there is very much menace of Nazi-ism in this country,” he continued. “We have had the Know-Nothing Party, the A. P. A., and the Ku Klux Klan — all of them ideally alike to the Nazis but such things cannot grow on American soil — the Nazi spirit has no place in America.”
