A German court here this week-end acquitted Veit Harlan, producer of the violently anti-Semitic film “Jew Suess,” of charges of crimes against humanity. This was Harlan’s second acquittal on the same charges; the first decision was upset by an appeals court in Cologne.
The prosecutor had demanded a two-year sentence and a fine of 105,000 marks (approximately $25,000). Harlan’s defense was that the film was ordered by Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s porpaganda chief. During the second trial here, a mob of about 100 Germansthreatened and insulted a half-Jewish women who testified against the producer.
