The German export drive has reaped a richer harvest than ever before in the Arab states during the very period when Arab spokesmen and their German friends threatened–in an effort to spike German reparations deliveries–that a boycott was about to go into effect, it was learned here today.
Statistics covering the first eight months of 1953 now reveal that exports to Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Yemen reached 263 million marks, compared to 163 million in the same period of 1952. Imports, for the most part of petroleum products and Eygptian cotton, also showed an upward trend, increasing by 19 million marks to 320 million marks. Germany’s trade deficit with the Arab bloc has, in other words, been reduced from 138 million marks to 57,000,000 marks.
