West German Finance Minister Franz Etzel is interested in establishing a “good accord” between the government and organizations of victims of Nazi persecution. Dr. H.G. van Darn, secretary general of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said here.
He made his statement after a conference between Herr Etzel and representatives of the League of German Associations of Persecutees of National Socialism. Dr van Dam, counsel for the League, said that in a discussion of the political, legal and moral problems of compensation Herr Etzel was very cooperative.
The Committee of Jewish Attorneys and Notaries of West Germany has protested statements by Bonn Justice Minister Fritz Schaeffer and other German political figures blaming the restitution and indemnification programs for fiscal problems in the ration and in the various states.
Senator Joachim Lipschitz, in charge of interior affairs of the Berlin municipal government, has promised Heinz GalinsKi, head of the Jewish Community of Berlin, that German Jews returning abroad will be given assistance in re-integrating themselves into the Berlin rights. He also pledged positive action to legalize the rights of German Jews who left Berlin and later returned to the city on tourist visas but settled here nevertheless.
