Renovation of the oldest synagogue in this State of Hesse was recommended here today by the Hessian State Indemnification Commission. The synagogue, at Michelstadt, originally consecrated in 1791, was partially wrecked during the 1938 “Crystal Night” atrocities carried out by Nazi gangs.
At the same time, a commission appointed by the State Legislature reported that it had completed inspection of 342 Jewish cemeteries in Hesse, and found that “for the most part, they were in good condition. ” Members of the commission have been visiting the cemeteries during the last few weeks, accompanied by Rabbi I. E. Lichtigfeld.
