The will of German Jewry to live and develop in spite of all hindrances was proclaimed to-day at the consecration of the new Hamburg Temple, and outstanding structure, combining the functions of a synagogue and a Jewish cultural centre, which was converted into a big festival of the Liberal Jews of Germany and of the entire Free City of Hamburg. The members of the Senate of the Hamburg Free City, and all the city officials were present, as well as the leaders of the Federation of Liberal Jews from all parts of Germany, and immense numbers of the Jews of Hamburg, as well as many non-Jewish citizens. Rabbi Italiener, Rabbi Professor Seligmann and Rabbi Dienemann, who delivered the consecration addresses, emphasised that the new Temple symbolised the determination of the Jews of Germany to maintain the existence of Judaism. Messages of greeting were received from Dr. Claude G. Montefiore, Rabbi Dr. Mattuck and Miss Lily Montagu, the President, Vice-President and Honorary Secretary respectively of the World Union of Progressive Judaism.
A reception was held in the afternoon, at which many addresses were delivered, and Herr Goetz, the Secretary-General of the Federation of Liberal Jews in Germany, spoke of the present strength of the Liberal Jewish movement in Germany.
