The collective protest of German Jewry against the repeated acts of vandalism purpetrated during the past three years in the “war against the Jewish dead,” was given expression at a huge mass meeting held Friday night in the former Prussian House of Lords.
The meeting was called under the auspices of the Central Union of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith to protest against the apparently organized band of booligans who have desecrated close to seventy Jewish cemeteries, many of great historic value, in all parts of the German Republic. Dr. Julius Brodnitz, president of the Central Union, presided over the meeting.
Herr Koch, leader of the Democratic Party and Minister of Justice in the Federal government, Herr Bartels, Socialist leader and speaker of the Prussian Diet, Herr Heltscher, state secretary in the Prussian Ministry of Justice, and Herr Weiss, vice-president of the Polizei praesidium in Berlin, came to express the indignation and the pain of the German Federal government and the Prussian government at the acts of vandalism “perpetrated” on the sanctities of the Jewish Germans, acts which are a blof on German culture.” The speakers announced in emphatic terms that the German authorities have issued instructions to inaugurate a most thorough investigation of the cases reported with a view of meting out punishment to those found guilty.
Among the representatives of the Jewish community who addressed the mass meeting were Kommerzienrat Gerson Simon, Bruno Weil, Julius Bab, Professor Blumenthal.
A resolution calling on “the conscience of the German people to remove the blot on German culture” was unanimously adopted.
