A German journalist said today that the general belief that the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen had been an extermination center for many thousands of victims of the Nazis, was highly incorrect.
The writer, Richard Schweitzer, said in an article in the Westphalische Zeitung that he had been sent to establish the “true facts” about the notorious camp. He said that “everyone” who had had any contact with the camp had assured him that “gas chambers and crematoria did not exist on a large scale.” An official told him, he added, that only one corpse could be cremated at a time and that the gas chambers, which thousands had entered, were actually a “delousing center.”
