The City Council here today agreed that a tablet commemorating a synagogue destroyed by the Nazis during the infamous “Crystal Night” of 1938 should mention the fact.
Placement of a plaque on the site of the old synagogue was decided upon last Summer. Since then, however, some members of the Council complained that the wording on the plaque avoided mentioning what had happened to the missing Jewish house of worship.
The wording finally agreed at today’s meeting of the Council is “Here once stood the synagogue built in the year 1884. Its arbitrary destruction on November 10, 1938 should be a reminder to our conscience to cherish humanity and justice.”
