Dr. Herbert Lewin this week accepted the position of chief physician at the municipal women’s hospital at Offenbach, in the American zone of Germany. His case became world famous several months ago when the municipal administration of Offen bach withdrew his appointment after having first confirmed it, because Dr. Lewin was a Jew.
The American military government, the Hesse provincial government and the German Social Democratic Party all launched investigations into the action at that time. The result was the resignation of the vice-mayor, who was chiefly responsible for the situation, and the extension of a new offer to the physician.
