Israel’s recent note to Poland, supporting the Warsaw Government’s contention that the Oder-Niesse border between Poland and West Germany cannot be altered, will be debated openly this week in the Bundestag, the lower house of Parliament here.
One of the knottiest problems at issue between Germany and the Communist bloc is Bonn’s insistence on the claim that Poland is not entitled to what it calls its western territories, an area along the Oder and Niesse rivers, cut off from Germany after the war and given to Poland.
Josef Erpo, a member of the Bundestag, has filed a formal question, which under the rules will have to be answered either by the Foreign Minister or another member of the West German Cabinet, regarding Israel’s attitude. The question is framed in such a manner as to criticize Israel not only for recognizing Poland’s claim to the validity of the Oder-Niesse line. It also asks why Israel announced its support of Poland at the very time Germany and Israel were signing the agreement under which Bonn is extending economic aid to Israel.
