German President Urges Jews in New Year’s Message to “overcome Evil Inheritance”

President Theodor Heuss of Germany, in a New Year’s message to Jews living in western Germany, said today there was still bitterness in the Jewish community for Nazi desecrations of synagogues. “The Jews will not forget, the loyal Germans must not, but together we must overcome our evil inheritance,” the President stated.

A message from Chancellor Konrad Adenauer called on the Jews in Germany to takes part in the “intellectual, social and political reconstruction of our country.” The German Chancellor’s message, one of numerous greetings extended on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah by leaders of the West German State, added: “We recognize our duty to make good as far as is humanly possible the injuries already inflicted upon the Jews.”
